Bangor, ME – The Bangor Symphony Orchestra’s 124th season continues on Sunday, November 10th with a program focused on the music of Brahms and Prokofiev. The concert opens with the Academic Festival Overture by Brahms, with members of the Bangor Symphony Youth Orchestras joining the BSO for a special side-by-side performance of the piece. This unique collaboration highlights Music Director Lucas Richman’s commitment to education over the course of his 10 seasons in Bangor, and the Academic Festival Overture is also the first piece he conducted as a 16-year-old student at Tanglewood.
The program continues when pianist Benjamin Hochman returns eight years after his BSO debut to perform Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No. 3. Hochman has performed around the world in venues including Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center since his last performance with the BSO, with The New York Times writing, “Classical music doesn’t get better than this.” Earlier this month, his debut album with the English Chamber Orchestra was released.
The program concludes with contrasting works: a new piece by Lucas Richman commissioned at the 2019 Symphony Soiree, and the passion-filled Symphony No. 3 by Brahms.
The BSO’s Masterworks II: Brahms & Prokofiev takes place Sunday, November 10th at 3 p.m. at the Collins Center for the Arts on the campus of the University of Maine, Orono. The UBS Pre-Concert Lecture takes place at 2 p.m. Tickets range from $15 to $46 plus box office fees, with student tickets at $10. Available online at bangorsymphony.org or at 1-800-622-TIXX. This concert is made possible with support of Robert and Molly Nagle.
