Bangor Symphony Orchestra Announces Mitchell Newman as New Concertmaster
Bangor, Maine – The Bangor Symphony Orchestra (BSO) proudly announces the appointment of Mitchell Newman as its permanent Concertmaster. This significant appointment follows Newman’s impactful tenure as Interim Concertmaster, a period marked by exemplary leadership and artistic contributions.
Lucas Richman, Conductor and Music Director of the BSO, is enthusiastic in welcoming him to this position: “It’s been my privilege to have shared music-making with Mitchell Newman for many years so continuing our collaboration in this way is a dream come true. I am profoundly confident in his abilities to lead our orchestra as Concertmaster not only because of his outstanding musicianship but also because of the artistic integrity and dedication he brings to all of his community engagement activities outside of the concert hall.”
“I am absolutely thrilled to welcome Mitchell Newman as Concertmaster of the Bangor Symphony Orchestra.” Said Renia Shterenberg, Executive Director, “With his 30+ years as a member of the LA Phil, Mitch brings world-class professionalism to our stage. He demonstrates exceptional skill, positive leadership, and an ability to unite not only the strings but the entire orchestra during rehearsals and concerts. His positive attitude, willingness to work with others, and genuine love for music will carry us forward in the very best possible way!”
The concertmaster plays a pivotal role in an orchestra, blending leadership, musicianship, and coordination into one critical position, requiring not only exceptional playing skills but also leadership qualities, diplomacy, and a deep understanding of orchestral repertoire. It’s a position that’s crucial for the artistic and operational harmony of the orchestra. The Orchestra Committee unanimously supports Mitch’s appointment.
Mitchell Newman’s distinguished career includes over three decades with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, extensive work in music education, and impactful community outreach initiatives. His dedication to bringing music to underserved communities and his commitment to education align with the BSO’s values of accessibility and community engagement.
Newman’s upcoming work with the BSO includes a collaboration in April 2024, featuring events and concerts aimed at supporting local homeless shelters, underlining his commitment to using music as a tool for social change. On April 28, 2024, Newman will be featured as the soloist for Richman’s Violin Concerto, “Paths to Dignity”.
Newman himself is excited about the opportunity: “I am deeply honored to join the Bangor Symphony Orchestra as Concertmaster. I look forward to fostering a culture of musical excellence and community connection, and I am eager to contribute to the BSO’s vibrant future.”
