Maine High School Concerto Competition

Bangor, Maine: For more than 40 years, the Bangor Symphony Orchestra has been encouraging and recognizing the outstanding talents of Maine’s high school instrumentalists. On Sunday, February 9, 2025 at 2:00 pm a public audition recital will be held at Minsky Auditorium on the campus of the University of Maine. The finalists for this year’s competition are:

Ronan Sanda, cello
10th grade, Eddington, homeschool
Haydn Cello Concerto in C Major, 1st movement

Noah Smith, clarinet
12th grade, Buchfield Jr. High School
Weber 2nd Clarinet Concerto, 3rd movement

George Taylor, violin
12th grade, Waterville, Waterville Sr. High School
Lalo Symphony Espagnole, 1st movement

Linnea Turesson, violin
10th grade, Rockport, Camden Hills Regional High School
Mendelssohn Violin Concerto, 1st movement

The 44th Annual Maine High School Concerto Competition public audition recital is free and open to the public.

The first-prize winner for the Annas-Cupp Award will be featured in a concerto performance with the Bangor Symphony Orchestra at the annual Young People’s Concerts on May 5, 2025 at the Collins Center for the Arts.

Eligibility

This competition occurs annually and is open to any solo string, woodwind, brass, percussion, harp, and piano students in grades 9 through 12, at the time of the application due date. Entrants must not have graduated and must be enrolled in high school or high school program (e.g. home school). Entrants must not have taken the GED. Dual enrollment students are eligible. Entrants must be Maine residents, but may attend high school outside the state of Maine. If questions arise, proof of age, enrollment, and residency may be necessary. Winners of the Annas-Cupp Award in any preceding year are ineligible to compete.

Awards

  • 1st Place, Annas-Cupp Award, $500 and will be featured in a concerto performance with the Bangor Symphony Orchestra during their annual Young People’s Concerts
  • 2nd Place, Friends Award, $250
  • 3rd Place, Friends Award, $150
